In a study published in theInternational Journal of Impotence(IJI) and published in theJournal of the International College of Sexual Medicine(JHSM), men who had an erection for at least 4 hours a week were found to have a significantly lower risk of developing diabetes. “We have a lot of research that shows that, by the time we get to the age of 50, many men will have diabetes. It is important that men are aware of this, and that the diabetes that can occur is an underlying problem.”
Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to maintain or sustain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. It is caused by several factors, including physical and psychological factors such as stress and anxiety, as well as lifestyle choices such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
Men with diabetes are at higher risk of heart disease than men without diabetes, and in this study, the incidence of heart disease was highest among those with diabetes.
“We found that erectile dysfunction was strongly associated with diabetes, but there were no strong associations between diabetes and erectile dysfunction,” said Katan.
The study, led by researchers at the JHSM, analyzed the data of 4,000 men from the United States and Canada who had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction and diabetes at baseline, and then used age-adjusted prevalence and risk factors to estimate the prevalence of the three types of erectile dysfunction.
The risk of developing diabetes in men with diabetes was highest among men with diabetes who had tried other treatment methods, such as surgery and vacuum erection devices, or who used other medications for erectile dysfunction.
“We found that diabetes was strongly associated with heart disease, and in this study, diabetes was also strongly associated with erectile dysfunction.”
